This was an early start for WWISC as we departed Wycombe at 07:30 for Peterborough. We had played them earlier in the season and defeated them 5-4 so hopes were high of completing a rare double.
Unfortunately due to a couple of late drop outs, we were only able to field the bare 11 players so fitness was the key to our chances of victory…

Kick Off

The game kicked off and to say we started slowly is probably an understatement as we found ourselves 3-0 down within the first 15 mins. A lot of this was due to players having never played together before and also the long coach journey up was another good excuse we could use!
The remainder of the first half didn’t really get a great deal better although with Owen Wood up front we had a good outlet and he did create a couple of good chances late in the first half. However, when the half time whistle blew we found ourselves 6-0 down.

Half Time 6-0

Second half began with a couple of tactical changes which seemed to make a difference as the team seemed to be playing with a lot more belief.  We started to keep possession of the ball with both Matts’, Phil & Chris in midfield pulling the strings for Kraig and John up front. At the back with Owen (who had been moved back to add some pace to the back 4) playing a starring role alongside Bruce who was a real rock at the back with very little getting passed him all game. Alex & Jack at full backs were also having much better second halfs and our goal-keeper Steve who had a fine game for the entire 90mins was pulling off some incredible saves.
The score remained 6-0 until 20mins left when Owen who had just swapped places with Kraig up front went on a mazy run down the left which was ended when their central defender handled the ball just inside the area. Thankfully the ref saw it and pointed to the spot. Matt Shepherd stepped up and coolly slotted the ball to the keepers right to make the score 6-1.
This seemed to spur Peterborough on again and they piled on the pressure but we held firm until 5 mins from the end when from a corner they bundled the ball in to make it 7-1.
Our final chance of the game came in the last minute when Bruce powered a header just wide from a corner.

Full Time 7-1

The score line would suggest we got a good stuffing which in the first half was totally true. However, we improved greatly in the second half and gave them a good game and to take the positives we held them 1-1 in the second 45!
Special thanks to John for making his debut for us and for also driving us all up there. Also special thanks to Steve for agreeing to play in goal for us at short notice. You certainly kept the score down especially in the first half.
