WWISC kicked off their opening game of the 2005/06 season against a team we've never faced before. Our 'vast' playing budget had allowed us to make a number of new signings during the close season all of which were on show.
The game started off with both teams happy to sit back and not take too many chances although this was to change as the game wore on.
First out of the blocks were Peterborough who to be fair had the better of the opening period although WWISC soon levelled and we then took the lead as we gradually got on top of our opponents. We then had a third goal harshly ruled out just before half time and to rub salt into the wounds, Posh quickly broke and equalised in the 45th minute.
Half Time 1-1
The second half kicked off with WWISC on the ascendancy and putting Posh on the back foot from the off. However, against the run of play we suddenly found ourselves 3-2 but we continued to play the better football and the equaliser was soon coming. WWISC's superior fitness (we had subs and they didn't which at our level makes a BIG difference) was beginning to pay dividends as we pulled apart Posh's defence time and time again and with 20 mins left the 4th goal arrived quickly followed by a fifth.
To Posh's credit they never gave in and pulled a goal back with 10 mins left and as they pushed everyone forward gaps were left at the back which we almost took advantage of on numerous occasions.
The one final scare came in the last couple of mins when they crashed a 20 yarder against our post although Gareth our keeper claimed he had it covered (so much so that he didn't bother to dive!)
The final whistle then blew with much celebrating amongst the WWISC team. This had been our first victory for nearly 2 years!
Full Time 5-4
Our goal scorers on the day were as follows:
Owen (2)
Matt
Chris
Alex
There were some outstanding individual performances from our new players and with youth on their side made a massive difference to us especially in the latter parts of the second half. A couple of our 'experienced' players (sorry Justin & Matt) also had good games with Matt setting up a number of our goals. Some of the goals scored from both teams were of the highest quality with one of ours (apologies for not remembering who scored it!) being a screamer from at least 25 yards.
The game itself was played in the right spirit by both sides so massive credit must go to all players involved.
One final thank you must go to Steve Cooper who kindly refereed the game for us and did a very good job. The sight of him in his official referees outfit had the desired affect as I don't think he had any problem with players back chatting or contesting his decisions.
